Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 3

Popular and virtuosic

Summer 1909 Rachmaninov was in Dresden working, as usually in secret, with his new piano concerto which he wanted to present for an American audience. While he was working with the score, there was no time left for practising the new work, and he had to use a silent piano on the ship that took him over the Atlantic. He premiered the new work with the New York Philharmonic conducted by Walter Damrosch.
