Mahler: Symphony No. 1
From symphonic poem to symphony.
Gustav Mahler's first symphony was revised several times before the composer came up with the version we hear today. When the work was premiered in 1889, Mahler called it a symphonic poem in two parts. In the first movement we meet the wayfarer walking in the forrest as the sun is shining, and in the third movement we hear funeral music and children's songs, and in the last movement the mood is changing until it ends in a glorious climax.
