Bernstein: Overture to Candide

Full of Bernstein's energy and rhythmic style.

Leonard Bernstein's operetta Candide is based on philosopher Voltaire's novella from 1759 with the same title. The operetta was premiered on Broadway (Martin Beck Theatre) in 1956, but was revised later. Voltaire's Candide is a satire on the prevailing attitudes of his time, in particular those of the church and the ruling classes.

The ouverture has found its place in the orchestral repertoire, and is the most frequently performed piece by Bernstein in addition to the symphonic dances from West Side Story.
