Wagner: Wesendonck Lieder

The circumstances under which Wagner wrote his Wesendoncklieder are legendary. Because of his political activity, he was forced to flee to Switzerland, where he continued to work on his music. He was also, as usual, broke. The wealthy Otto Wesendonck came to his rescue and lent him money. Wagner then meets his wife Mathilde, and he fell in love with her. His feelings are reciprocated. To make a long story short, Mathilde wrote five passionate poems for which Wagner made music.
