Sibelius: Luonnotar
Lise Davidsen sings about the daughter of Air.
Sibelius' tone poems stand alongside his symphonies as his greatest creations. Luonnotar is a single movement and based on the creation-myth in Kalevala, the Finnish myhological epic. Luonnotar, the daughter of Air, is living alone i space before coming down to earth as the Mother of Waters. A great tempest suddenly arises, and Luonnotar calls to Ukko, the Father of Heavens, to help, which he sends in the form of a sea bird. It nests on Luonnotar's knee, which she lifts out of the water. Eggs come out and rolls into the water, where they shatter. From the pieces of the eggshells come the sky, the sun, the moon and the stars.
