Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4
Urgent, supercharged and full of great tunes.
Few composers so vividly captured their struggle with fate in music as Tchaikovsky did. ‘This is fate’, he wrote to a friend in 1877 as he grappled with the opening notes of his Fourth Symphony, ‘it hangs above your head like the sword of Damacles.’ But by the symphony’s final chapter, Tchaikovsky had found hope from despair, and his music veered towards unstoppable joy.
