Barber: Violin Concerto
Virtuosic, demanding and romantic.
Samuel Barber composed his only Violin Concerto in 1939. The piece was commissioned by the rich industrialist Samuel Simeon Fels. Barber went to Switzerland to compose in peace and quiet. He was, however, disturbed by the Second World war and had to return to the US. He sent the two first movements to the soloist, who liked them. There was, howevere, disagreement about the last and very technically demanding movement. There exists different version of what actually happened.
Young Sonoko Miriam Welde is solist with Bergen Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.
