Mahler: Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen
Songs of a Wayfarer, Song Cycle.
Mahler appears to have begun composing the songs in 1884 and completed them the year after. He revised the cycle several times. The cycle was premiered in 1886 with baritone Anton Sistermans and the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by the composer himself. The lyrics are by Mahler himself, but they are influenced by Des Knaben Wunderhorn (collection of German folk poetry). There are strong connections between this cycle and Mahler's first symphony.
