Grieg: Olav Tryggvason

An abandoned opera.

Edvard Grieg and the Norwegian author, playwright, poet and public speaker Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson wanted to make the new Norwegian National Opera - Olav Tryggvason (a Viking King) - but the work was never completed. Three scenes were finished relatively quickly, but then the whole process stopped. Bjørnson didn't give Grieg more text to work on. Grieg asked for more - ''Isn't Olav Tryggvason coming?'', he wrote. The whole project was abandoned and the two of them lost touch for many years.
