Livestream: Brahms Festival: Gardner and Vogt
Friday 28 September
Long before he got into his symphonic stride, Johannes Brahms faced a familiar crisis of confidence when writing his first Piano Concerto.
Watch the concert live on this page. The transmission starts at 19.25 on Friday 28 September.
The composer wanted his piece to be the most monumental, hard-hitting and original orchestral achievement since Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony written 34 years earlier. It took Brahms a long time to get his concerto just right, but when he did, he delivered piece of huge emotional breadth that still thrills and surprises a century and a half later.
After Lars Vogt negotiates the concerto’s virtuosic demands, Edward Gardner brings us the radiant beauty and dark foreboding of the same composer’s Third Symphony. The symphony is full of rhythmic vitality and thrusting energy, but never at the expense of the glowing orchestral colours that Brahms delivers better than anyone.
